The UK is becoming much more diverse by age, by ethnicity and by social grade:
● By 2040, half the UK's population will be aged under 18 or over 60
● The proportion of British residents who are members of a minority ethnic group is
projected to rise to 38% by 2050 (an increase from 16% in mid-2012)
● The income gap between the richest and poorest members of our society
will widen if trends continue to follow the pattern of the last 40 years
There are signs that the engines that helped people to mix across these lines are currently in decline. This raises a lot of interesting questions.
Through the work of the Commission, we plan to delve deeper into some of these questions and make practical recommendations on how to make diversity work over the next 30 years.
